Nutritional Therapy – Early Postoperative Stage

In the immediate postoperative period, all patients with extensive small intestine resection require TPN, which provides the protein, calories, and other macro- and micronutrients required when foods taken orally cannot be tolerated. TPN is started slowly and gradually increased, to help prevent diarrhea and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). During this initial phase, fluid and electrolyte imbalances are often a complicating factor and must be closely managed.
