Extensive intestinal resection can also result in an
impaired absorption of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates pass into the colon,
and are broken down by bacteria into osmotically active molecules. These
molecules directly stimulate the colon to secrete fluid and electrolytes
into the lumen, resulting in osmotic diarrhea.
