SBS may improve over time as intestinal adaptation takes
place. Increased absorption and a longer transit time of food through
the intestine usually occurs with recovery from the surgery. Advances
in surgical techniques have resulted in intestinal transplantation becoming
more common, although it is still only an option in the most severe cases.
Research is also being conducted into other treatments that might help
with adjustment to SBS and its resulting complications.
